An artist named Anish Kapoor made it. Many people call it "The Bean" because of its shape.

The art was inspired by liquid mercury. It is made of 168 stainless steel plates. These plates are welded together. The surface is so smooth that you cannot see the seams.

Cloud Gate acts like a giant mirror. It reflects the clouds and the city skyline. The surface can even twist and distort those images. You can walk under the high arch of the sculpture. Underneath, there is a part called the omphalos. This is a hollow space that makes many reflections.

Building the art was not easy. Experts worried it might be too hot or too cold. They also thought making a seamless surface was impossible. The piece is very heavy. It weighs 110 tons. A large tent once covered it while workers polished the metal. Today, people visit from all over the world to take photos.
