arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Sphere is a giant metal ball. It is a bronze sculpture. An artist named Fritz Koenig made it. He called it his "biggest child." It was made of 67 bronze parts. These parts were joined together. The sculpture was very heavy. It weighed more than 20 tons.

In the past, it stood in New York City. It was a fountain between two tall towers. Water sprayed in a ring around the ball. The ball even turned slowly. It was a popular place for people to meet. The artist wanted it to stand for world peace.

During the attacks on September 11, the sculpture was damaged. It was the only art found mostly intact in the ruins. Now, it is a memorial. A memorial is a place to remember people. It sits in Liberty Park. The park looks over the site of the towers. The ball shows its damage. This helps people remember what happened. It has a new kind of beauty now.
