Making a churro is a very interesting process. First, you mix dough made of flour, water, and salt. Some recipes even use potato dough. You use a tool called a churrera to shape it. This tool is like a syringe with a star-shaped nozzle. It pushes the dough into hot oil. This creates a crunchy surface with many ridges.

No one knows exactly where the churro began. Some think it is very old. A food historian named Michael Krondl mentions a Roman recipe from the 1st century AD. Another idea is that Spanish shepherds made them in the mountains. They could fry the dough over an open fire. Some people think the idea came from China. They believe Portuguese sailors brought new ways to make dough from the Ming dynasty.

There are many different kinds of churros to discover. In Spain, thick ones are called porras or jeringos. In Seville, people call them calientes. These can be shaped into a large spiral. In Brazil, churros are often filled with dulce de leche. In Cuba, they might have guava jelly inside. Some people in Uruguay even fill them with melted cheese!

Churros are a big part of many cultures. In the Philippines, people eat them during Christmas. In Thailand, a similar fried dough is called patonggo. You can find special shops called churrerías in many streets. These shops are common in Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Even famous TV shows have stories about them. The name churro might even sound like the noise of frying.
