A burrito is a tasty meal that many people love to eat. It is a flour tortilla wrapped into a sealed, cylindrical shape around different ingredients.

This tight wrapping helps keep all the food together inside. Many people choose to eat them with their hands because of this shape. Sometimes, a burrito is served "wet." This means it is covered in a savory or spicy sauce. When a burrito is wet, you should use a fork and knife to eat it.

There are many ways to fill a burrito with delicious things. Most often, people use meats like beef, chicken, or pork. You might also find rice, cheese, or cooked beans inside. Some fillings include vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes. You can even add condiments like salsa, guacamole, or crema to add more flavor.

In Central and Southern Mexico, these wheat flour wraps are often called "tacos de harina."

The name "burrito" is a Spanish word that means "little donkey." People have many different stories about why it has this name. One story says the name comes from how much a burrito can carry. This is similar to how a donkey carries a large, heavy load. Another idea is that the rolled tortilla looks like a pack carried by a donkey. Some people in Sonora say the name started because some stands sold donkey meat instead of beef.

History shows that people have been wrapping food in tortillas for a very long time. The Maya civilization used corn tortillas as early as 1500 BC. They filled them with things like chili peppers, mushrooms, and avocado. The modern burrito we know today is often linked to Ciudad Juárez. In the 1930s, burritos first appeared on American restaurant menus in Los Angeles. Later, in 1956, a person named Duane Roberts created the first frozen burrito in Southern California.

Today, there are many special kinds of burritos in different places. The Mission-style burrito comes from San Francisco and is very large. It is often wrapped in aluminum foil and filled with rice and sour cream. In San Diego, you can find the California burrito. This version is a mix of foods that includes chunks of carne asada meat and French fries.
