language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mexican cuisine is a rich and ancient way of eating. It is much more than just food on a plate. It is a deep part of the culture and social life in Mexico. People use food to celebrate special holidays and stay close to their families. Preparing big meals is a way to show care for others. Because it is so important to the people, UNESCO added it to a special list of human heritage in 2010.

Many meals start with the most important ingredients: corn and chile peppers. Most corn is dried and then goes through a process called nixtamalization. This turns the corn into a dough called masa. People use masa to make many things like tamales, sopes, and tortillas. Tortillas are eaten with almost every meal in most parts of the country.

Chile peppers are also used in almost everything. They are not just for heat; they add many different flavors. If a snack is not spicy, people often add a hot sauce or pickled chiles.

Daily life in Mexico often revolves around meal times. Most households eat four meals every day. The heaviest meal is called "comida," and it happens between noon and 2 p.m. It often includes meat in a sauce, beans, and tortillas.

In the evening, people might have a lighter supper or eat leftovers. Some foods are made specifically for festivals. For example, pan de muerto is baked for the Day of the Dead.
