China Machado was a very famous fashion model and editor. She was born in Shanghai, China, on December 25, 1929. Her father came from Macau, and her mother was Chinese. Her grandmother was from a place called Goa. As a young girl, she learned many useful skills. She learned how to cook, sew, knit, and crochet.

Her career in fashion started in a very surprising way. When she was nineteen, she moved to Paris. She went there to work for a designer named Hubert de Givenchy. She did not know how to walk like a professional model yet. She simply copied the girl walking in front of her! This helped her join a group of models called the cabine.

She eventually worked for other designers like Balenciaga and Oleg Cassini. She even became the highest-paid runway model in Europe. She earned $1,000 every single day.

In 1959, China Machado made history in the fashion world. She appeared in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine. This made her the first model of color in a major American fashion magazine. Some people were worried about using her photos. They thought people in the South might stop buying the magazine.

However, a photographer named Richard Avedon helped her. He was her mentor and a very close friend. He even threatened to quit his contract to make sure her photos were used.

China had a very long and busy life in many different jobs. She worked as a Senior Fashion Editor for Harper’s Bazaar. Later, she became the Fashion Director for the magazine. In 1989, she was added to the International Best Dressed List. She also opened an art gallery in Watermill, New York, in 1991.

She showed works by many famous photographers in her gallery. Even at age 82, she returned to modeling and appeared in many interviews. She even did advertisements for a brand called Cole Haan.

Her life was full of many different people and places. She lived in New York for most of her life after 1960. She married Martin LaSalle and later married Riccardo Rosa. She had two daughters named Blanche and Emmanuelle. China passed away on December 18, 2016, at the age of 86.

Many years after her big magazine moment, Time magazine chose her for a special tribute. They celebrated her as one of the women of the year for 1958.
