China Machado was a famous fashion model and editor. She was born in Shanghai, China. Her father was from Macau. Her mother was Chinese. As a child, she learned to sew and knit.

Later, she moved to Paris to work with clothes. She worked for the designer Hubert de Givenchy. She did not know how to walk like a model yet. She just copied the girl in front of her! This helped her start a big career. She became the highest-paid runway model in Europe. She earned $1,000 a day.

In 1959, she made history. She was the first model of color in a major American magazine. That magazine was called Harper’s Bazaar. At first, some people were afraid to use her photos. They worried people would stop buying the magazine. But a man named Richard Avedon helped her. He was a famous photographer and her mentor.

China worked as a fashion director later in life. She also opened an art gallery in New York. She was very active even at age 82. She even did ads for clothing brands again. She lived a very long and busy life.
