He took pictures for big magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He was known for capturing movement in his photos. This made fashion, dance, and theater look alive.

Avedon loved to take portraits. A portrait is a picture of a person. He wanted to show a person's true soul. He often used a large studio camera. He did not use soft lights or extra props. This helped him show the real character of his subjects. He even asked deep questions to help them show emotion.

He photographed many famous people. He took pictures of The Beatles and Marilyn Monroe. He also took photos of people in the Civil Rights Movement.

Later, he did a big project called "In the American West." He traveled to coal mines and oil fields. He took pictures of everyday workers like farmers and miners. He made these prints very large. He said this was his best work. These photos showed the real lives of people in the West. He wanted to find the story inside every person he met.
