As a revolutionary, journalist, and educator, he helped shape the modern Chinese identity. He was a co-founder of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1921. He also led major social shifts like the New Culture Movement and the May Fourth Movement. His work focused on modernizing Chinese thought through science, democracy, and language reform.

Chen's early life in Anhui provided a foundation of both tradition and change. Born on October 9, 1879, he grew up in a gentry family. His father died when Chen was two years old. He was raised by his uncle, Chen Xifan, a wealthy official. This family background exposed him to both Confucian classics and new Western commercial ideas.

These early influences helped him later critique the traditional elites who he believed slowed China's progress.

As a student, Chen showed an early talent for rigorous scholarship. In 1896, at age 17, he ranked first in his district in the imperial xiucai examination. He was deeply interested in the kaozheng school, which used critical research to study history. He also studied at the Qiushi Academy in Hangzhou. This institution was one of the first to teach Western subjects alongside traditional ones.

His time in Japan further radicalized him, as he joined student activist groups.

One of Chen's most lasting contributions was the vernacular literary revolution. He believed the complex classical language used in writing was too difficult for common people. To fix this, he helped start the Anhui Common Speech Journal in 1904.

This was one of the first newspapers in China to use baihua, or the spoken vernacular. He used this platform to discuss science, history, and national defense. He even wrote short stories and plays in this new, easier style to reach more readers.

During the New Culture Movement, Chen became a national leader of thought. He served as the Dean of Arts and Letters at Peking University.

As the editor of the influential magazine New Youth, he championed democracy and science. He used his writing to critique traditional Confucianism and the existing social order. His leadership helped inspire the May Fourth generation of activists in 1919. These movements sought to modernize China's intellectual landscape.

In 1921, Chen moved into direct political leadership. Influenced by the Russian Revolution, he embraced Marxism. Alongside Li Dazhao, he co-founded the Chinese Communist Party.

Chen served as the party's first General Secretary from 1921 to 1927. He managed the complex relationship known as the First United Front with the Kuomintang (KMT). However, political shifts led to his removal from leadership in 1927. He was later expelled from the CCP in 1929 after associating with the Trotskyist Left Opposition.

Chen's later years were marked by political isolation. He spent much of his remaining time in Sichuan. Even while isolated, he continued his philological research, which is the study of language in historical texts. He died on May 27, 1942.

While official histories sometimes criticize his political choices, he remains a pivotal figure. He represents the internationalist and Westernizing influences that characterized the early years of the CCP.
