In 1921, Chen helped start the Chinese Communist Party. He did this alongside another leader named Li Dazhao. Chen served as the very first General Secretary of the party. He led the group from 1921 until 1927. During this time, he worked with other political groups. He also helped lead the May Fourth Movement in 1919. 
Chen's life was not always easy or peaceful. He was removed from his leadership role in 1927. Later, he was even expelled from the party he helped start. He spent his final years in a place called Sichuan. He continued to study and write even when he was alone. He died on May 27, 1942. Even though his life was difficult, people still study him today. He remains a major figure in the history of modern China.

During the New Culture Movement, Chen became a national leader of thought. He served as the Dean of Arts and Letters at Peking University. 
In 1921, Chen moved into direct political leadership. Influenced by the Russian Revolution, he embraced Marxism. Alongside Li Dazhao, he co-founded the Chinese Communist Party. 
Chen's later years were marked by political isolation. He spent much of his remaining time in Sichuan. Even while isolated, he continued his philological research, which is the study of language in historical texts. He died on May 27, 1942.
