ChatGPT is a smart computer program called a generative artificial intelligence chatbot.

It was created by a company named OpenAI and released in November 2022. This tool is very important because it helped start a huge boom in artificial intelligence. This means many people and companies started paying a lot of attention to AI technology. It can do many jobs like writing essays, composing music, or even making computer code. People use it to translate languages or summarize long stories. It even works like a game partner for simple games like tic-tac-toe.

To make ChatGPT work, it uses something called large language models. These are systems that use generative pre-trained transformers, or GPTs, to create text, speech, and images.

The process starts with training the model on huge amounts of data. This data includes things like Wikipedia and many different computer programming languages. After that, the model goes through a step called fine-tuning to help it talk better. Human trainers help during this stage using supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback. In one step, trainers act as both the user and the assistant. In the next step, they rank different answers to create a reward model.

OpenAI has worked hard to grow this technology over several years. In February 2023, they started a paid service called ChatGPT Plus. They later added other plans like ChatGPT Team and ChatGPT Enterprise. In March 2023, they added plugins so the chatbot could use other tools. By October 2024, a Windows app was released on the Microsoft Store. In 2025, many new features arrived like the Pulse tool and ChatGPT Atlas. Atlas is a web browser that lets the assistant help you navigate the internet. They even released a tool called Deep Research in February 2025 to make detailed reports.

ChatGPT has reached many amazing numbers since it first launched. It gained 100 million users in only two months. This made it the fastest-growing consumer software application in history. Its website is now one of the top five most-visited sites in the whole world. To power all this, Microsoft built a supercomputer for OpenAI. This computer uses thousands of Nvidia GPUs to handle the work. Some experts say that just a few prompts might use a small amount of water for cooling the servers.

The company even plans to spend $1.4 trillion on AI infrastructure over eight years.

Even though ChatGPT is helpful, it has some limits you should know about. Sometimes it can produce "hallucinations," which are answers that sound real but are actually wrong or nonsensical. It can also show biases because of the data it learned from. Some people worry about how it uses copyrighted content for its training. There are also concerns about how it might be used for dishonest work in school. However, it can also be a great helper for preserving languages. For example, volunteers helped fine-tune its Icelandic skills to help keep that language strong.
