A chatbot is a software application or a web interface. It is designed to have conversations through text or speech.

Modern chatbots are often found online. They use generative artificial intelligence to talk with people. This technology helps them use natural language. They can even act like a real human partner. This makes them very useful for many different tasks.

How these tools work depends on their type. Simple chatbots use pattern matching to talk. They look for clue words in what you type. Then, they give a pre-programmed response to move the chat along.

Modern bots use a different way. They use deep learning and natural language processing. They often use large language models to create new text. These models are trained on a huge amount of text. This training gives them emergent abilities. They can do things they were not specifically trained to do.

People have been studying this for a long time. In 1950, Alan Turing wrote about computer intelligence. He proposed the Turing test to measure it. This test asks if a computer can impersonate a human. If a judge cannot tell the difference, the program passes.

In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum published ELIZA. It was a very early chatbot. Later, Kenneth Colby made PARRY in 1972. In 1995, a program called A.L.I.C.E. was released. It used a special language called AIML.

There are many interesting facts about chatbots. In 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT. This helped start a big boom in artificial intelligence. Many companies now use bots for customer service. For example, Facebook Messenger saw 100,000 bots by September 2017. Airlines like KLM and Aeroméxico use them too. Some bots even live in toys. The Hello Barbie doll uses a chatbot to talk.

Other toys use IBM's Watson to help children learn.

You might already see chatbots in your daily life. Many banks and hotels use them to answer questions. Some bots help people schedule doctor appointments. They can even help find health clinics. You might see them on apps like WhatsApp or Facebook. Even in politics, bots like Leader Lars have been used.
