ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by the company OpenAI.

It functions as a highly capable AI assistant that can generate human-like text, speech, and images. The system is built upon large language models, specifically known as generative pre-trained transformers, or GPTs. Since its release in November 2022, ChatGPT has significantly accelerated the global AI boom. This period is defined by rapid public interest and massive financial investment in artificial intelligence. The software is designed to handle diverse tasks, from writing essays to debugging complex computer code.

The mechanism behind ChatGPT involves a complex training process. It begins with foundation models trained on vast datasets. These datasets include software manuals, programming languages, and the text of Wikipedia. To make the model conversational, OpenAI uses a process called fine-tuning. This involves two main methods: supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). During supervised learning, human trainers act as both the user and the AI assistant. In the reinforcement learning stage, trainers rank different model responses. These rankings help create "reward models," which further refine the AI through iterations of proximal policy optimization.

OpenAI has expanded the capabilities of the chatbot through many distinct stages and features. In March 2023, the company added support for plugins, allowing connections to services like Expedia and Wolfram. By October 2024, a Windows application was released. In 2025, the platform became more "agentic," meaning it can perform autonomous tasks. For example, the Operator tool was released to handle web browser tasks like filling forms or scheduling appointments. Other specialized tools include Codex for coding and Deep Research for creating detailed reports.

History shows how rapidly this technology has grown and changed. After its initial launch, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Plus in February 2023 as a premium subscription. They later added Team and Enterprise plans for professional use. In December 2024, a Pro tier costing $200 per month was launched alongside the o1 model. The company also released ChatGPT Atlas in October 2025, which is a browser that integrates the assistant into web navigation. Even more recently, OpenAI introduced "ChatGPT Health" in early 2026 to allow users to discuss health topics in a separate, dedicated space.

The scale of ChatGPT's impact is reflected in massive numbers. It became the fastest-growing consumer software application in history by reaching 100 million users in just two months. Its website remains among the top five most-visited sites globally. To support this traffic, Microsoft built a supercomputer for OpenAI using thousands of Nvidia GPUs. In 2023, it was estimated that 30,000 such GPUs were used to power the service. This massive infrastructure requires significant resources. Scientists estimated that a series of 5 to 50 prompts requires a specific amount of water for cooling the Microsoft servers.

Despite its power, the system has notable limitations and controversies. One major issue is "hallucinations," where the model generates plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical information.

The model may also reflect biases present in its training data. There is also ongoing debate regarding the ethics of using copyrighted content for training. Furthermore, the process of building safety systems has been difficult. To train models to detect harmful content, OpenAI used outsourced workers in Kenya. These workers were paid between $1.32 and $2 per hour to label toxic and traumatic content.

ChatGPT connects to many different fields and global systems. It is used for language preservation, such as the project where 40 Icelandic volunteers helped fine-tune its Icelandic skills. In Albania, the government used the tool to translate European Union documents. The technology also intersects with commerce through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which allows for purchases on sites like Etsy. As OpenAI plans to spend $1.4 trillion on AI infrastructure over the next eight years, the chatbot continues to reshape how humans interact with information and technology.
