This land is mostly bare rock and dry paths. Long ago, massive floods changed everything. These floods happened when ice dams broke. The ice held back huge lakes. When the ice broke, the water rushed out. This happened many times over two million years.

The water was very strong. It washed away the top soil. This left the hard basalt rock behind. The floods carved deep, wide paths into the land. These paths look like a braid of many small channels. This is called an anastomosing pattern.

You can see strange shapes in the ground. There are giant ripples made of gravel. These ripples are much bigger than river ripples. You can also find large potholes. These were made by kolks. Kolks are swirling holes of water that pluck rock away. Large rocks called glacial erratics sit on the land too. These rocks traveled from very far away. Even scientists on Mars study these paths. They look a lot like water paths on Mars.
