It took decades of work to settle the controversy. In 1925, J. T. Pardee suggested that a draining glacial lake could provide the necessary water volume. Pardee spent 30 years researching and eventually identified Lake Missoula as the source. 
Timeline and frequency data show that these floods were not a single event. The most recent cataclysmic floods occurred between 18,200 and 14,000 years ago. However, the Scablands have been shaped by many older floods over the last two million years. Some evidence suggests megafloods occurred even before 1.5 million years ago. During the Pleistocene, there were many interglacial-glacial cycles. There have been at least 17 complete cycles since about 1.77 million years ago. Some estimates suggest there could have been as many as 100 separate Ice Age floods. If every glaciation included multiple floods, the total number of Ancient Cataclysmic Floods might exceed 1,000. 
The scale of the Scablands is immense. The area encompassing the Scablands is estimated to be between 60,000 and 100,000 square kilometers. The physical features vary greatly in size. While some buttes are small, rock basins can be quite large. For example, Rock Lake is a basin that is 30 meters deep. These massive quantities of water and the resulting landforms demonstrate the extreme impact of sudden geological events. The sheer volume of water required to create giant ripples and scour basalt proves the scale of the Missoula floods. 
Beyond Earth, the Channeled Scablands hold great importance for planetary science. The landscape serves as a terrestrial analog for the outflow channels found on Mars. This means that the processes seen in Washington can help scientists understand what happened on other planets. By studying how water carved these paths on Earth, researchers can better interpret the geological history of the Martian surface. The Scablands provide a real-world laboratory for studying how massive liquid flows reshape planetary surfaces.
