The Channeled Scablands are a very special part of Washington state.

This region is mostly bare rock and dry paths. It is also called a scabland because the water washed away the soil. This left the land looking barren and rocky. These lands have a unique shape called butte-and-basin. This means there are flat plateaus and steep canyon sides. The area is huge and covers much of eastern Washington.

These lands were shaped by massive floods. The water worked in a very powerful way. First, a giant ice sheet acted like a dam. This dam held back a huge lake called Lake Missoula. When the ice dam broke, the water rushed out. The floods were so strong they scoured the earth. They washed away the top layer of soil called loess. This left the hard basalt rock underneath. The water carved many paths that look like a braid. Scientists call this an anastomosing pattern.

Learning about these floods was a big mystery for a long time. A scientist named J. Harlen Bretz first described them in the 1920s. He noticed the channels were very strange. They ran uphill and downhill in odd ways. Many other scientists did not believe him at first. They thought the land was shaped by slow changes. Another scientist named J. T. Pardee helped solve the mystery. He suggested that a draining glacial lake caused the floods. He spent 30 years researching Lake Missoula.

There are many amazing facts about these floods. The last big floods happened between 18,200 and 14,000 years ago. However, these floods happened many times before that. Some floods might have happened before 1.5 million years ago. There may have been hundreds or even a thousand floods in total. You can see the power of the water in the ground. There are giant current ripples made of gravel. These ripples are much larger than ripples in a normal river. You can also find huge potholes. These were made by swirling water holes called kolks.

Looking at the Scablands can feel like looking at another world. You might see large boulders called glacial erratics. These rocks were carried very far by the ice and water. They do not match the rock around them. Because they look so unique, they help us learn about space. Planetary scientists study these paths on Earth. They look a lot like the outflow channels on Mars. By studying Washington, we can understand other planets.
