A celesta makes a sweet, bell-like sound.

It looks like a small piano. When you press a key, a hammer hits metal plates. These plates sit over wooden parts that help the sound ring. The name celeste means "heavenly" in French.

This instrument was made in 1886 by Auguste Mustel. It is part of the percussion family. However, many people think of it as a keyboard instrument.

A famous composer named Tchaikovsky used it in his ballet, The Nutcracker. He used it for the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." He wanted the music to sound like water drops from a fountain.

You can also hear it in movie music. It plays a part in the film Pinocchio. It also plays in the Harry Potter movies. The sound is very soft. It is not loud enough for a full orchestra to play loudly. Instead, it adds a magical feeling to the music. Some people use a piano or a computer to play its part if a celesta is not there.
