It is an Austronesian language used by the Bisaya people and other groups. Many people use it as a second language to talk to others. Some people call the language Bisayâ or Binisayâ. The name Cebuano comes from the island of Cebu. This island is the home of Standard Cebuano. It is a very important way for people to share their lives.

Learning how the language sounds is quite interesting. Long ago, it only had three vowel sounds. Later, the number of vowels grew to five after Spanish influence. Some sounds can change slightly depending on where a person lives. For example, the letter "l" might change in different areas. In Bohol, people might say "tambaw" instead of "tambal." In other places, the "l" might even sound like a "j." These small changes make each dialect feel special to its speakers.

The history of the language goes back a very long time. It comes from an ancient language called Proto-Malayo-Polynesian. This makes it a distant relative to Malay and Indonesian.

The first written record was made by Antonio Pigafetta in 1521. He was an Italian explorer on a famous expedition. Long ago, natives used a script called kudlit-kabadlit to write. They often wrote on materials that did not last very long. This makes it hard for us to find many old documents today.

Many people speak Cebuano in different parts of the Philippines.

It is spoken on islands like Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor. You can also hear it on parts of Negros and Leyte. In Mindanao, it is spoken in many large urban areas. Some studies say about 15.9 million people speak it. In 2020, data showed many households use it at home. It is a very widely used language in the region.

Cebuano connects people across many different islands and cultures. Even though people call it different names, it brings them together. Some people in Leyte call their version Kanâ. People from Bohol are often called Boholano or Bol-anon. Even with these different names, the language remains a strong link. It helps people in Central Visayas and Mindanao communicate. Writing in Cebuano also grew with authors like Vicente Yap Sotto. He wrote a famous story called "Maming" in 1901.
