The region is divided into four administrative parts. These are Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and the Negros Island Region. Some areas like Palawan and Masbate are also linked to Visayan people. Large cities like Cebu City, Bacolod City, and Iloilo City are found here.

People have many stories about how the Visayas got its name. Some old stories say the name comes from a great empire called Sri Vijaya. Others say it came from a king's exclamation of beauty.

Many of these stories are just guesses or folk tales. Spanish explorers first called the people "Pintados." This means "the painted ones." They used this name because the people had many tattoos.

Long ago, they traveled to many places. Some Chinese records from the 12th century call them "Peshiye." These people lived in coastal areas and were known for seafaring. Later, Spanish leaders arrived to colonize the islands. This led to many changes in culture and religion. Some people even fought back against Spanish rule. Leaders like Francisco Dagohoy led long rebellions to protect their way of life.

Today, the Visayas is a place of bright culture and celebration.
