A man named Ugarte finds special letters of transit. These papers allow people to travel freely through German-occupied Europe. After Ugarte is arrested, Rick ends up with these important papers. The plot grows when Ilsa enters the club. She is with her husband, Victor. Rick is angry because Ilsa left him in Paris years before. Later, a famous scene happens when the crowd sings "La Marseillaise" to drown out German music. This shows the strong feeling of patriotism in the crowd.

Making the movie was a fast and busy job.
