Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz.

It is a cinematic masterpiece set during the global conflict of World War II. The story takes place in the Moroccan city of Casablanca, which was under Vichy French control. The film follows Rick Blaine, an American expatriate who operates a nightclub called Rick's Café Américain.

The narrative centers on a profound moral dilemma. Rick must choose between his personal love for a woman named Ilsa Lund and his duty to help her husband, Victor Laszlo. Laszlo is a renowned leader of the Czechoslovak Resistance fighting against the Nazis. This conflict between private desire and political necessity drives the entire drama.

The plot is set in motion by a set of valuable documents known as letters of transit.

These papers allow holders to travel freely through German-occupied Europe and into neutral Portugal. A petty crook named Ugarte obtains these letters by murdering two German couriers. After Ugarte is arrested and killed by the local police, Rick unexpectedly comes into possession of the documents. The tension rises when Ilsa enters the nightclub, revealing a painful past connection to Rick. A flashback shows that Ilsa left Rick without explanation in Paris during 1940. This event left Rick feeling bitter and cynical toward the world.

The film features several distinct character types and social groups within the nightclub setting. There are Vichy French and German officials who hold power in the city. There are also desperate refugees attempting to reach the neutral United States. The cast includes diverse figures like Signor Ferrari, an underworld business rival, and Captain Louis Renault, a corrupt prefect of police.

The tension between these groups is highlighted during a musical confrontation. When German officers sing "Die Wacht am Rhein," the house band responds by playing "La Marseillaise." This act of musical patriotism allows the crowd to drown out the German presence.

The production of Casablanca was a complex and rushed process. The screenplay was adapted from an unproduced stage play titled "Everybody Comes to Rick's" by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison.

In early 1942, Irene Diamond convinced producer Hal B. Wallis to purchase the film rights. Writers Julius and Philip G. Epstein were initially assigned to the script. They eventually left to work on the "Why We Fight" series, leading Howard Koch to join the writing team. Principal photography began on May 25, 1942, and concluded on August 3, 1942. Most filming occurred at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, though one sequence was shot at Van Nuys Airport.

The film was released quickly to capitalize on the Allied invasion of North Africa.

Because of this rush, a planned scene involving an Allied ship was scrapped by the marketing department. Despite the fast pace, the film achieved significant success. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Michael Curtiz received the award for Best Director, and the writers won for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The theme song, "As Time Goes By," is also deeply recognized. The film's cultural impact is so great that its lines appear in academic titles regarding sociology and politics. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for the National Film Registry. This honors its status as a work that is culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Beyond its story, the film is a study of international cooperation and sacrifice. The cast itself was notably international, with only three credited actors born in the United States.

This diversity reflects the global nature of the era the film depicts. The chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is often cited by critics as a key element of its lasting power. Even decades later, the film is frequently ranked near the top of historical lists of the greatest movies ever made.
