It was released in 1945. The film is a war drama. It uses a style called neorealism. This style makes stories feel very real. The movie shows how people lived during the war. It focuses on life in Rome in 1944. This was a time of Nazi occupation. The title comes from Rome being an "open city." This status began on August 14, 1943. The film is part of a set of three movies. People call this the "Neorealist Trilogy." It includes the films Paisan and Germany, Year Zero.

The story follows many different people. A man named Luigi Ferraris is a resistance fighter. He uses the name Giorgio Manfredi to hide. He tries to escape the city. A man named Francesco helps him hide. Francesco has a fiancée named Pina. Pina is pregnant in the film. A Catholic priest named Don Pietro also helps. He carries messages and money to partisans. The characters face many hard jobs. They must work together to survive. The movie shows their fear and their bravery.

Roberto Rossellini directed the film. He also worked with writers Sergio Amidei, Celeste Negarville, and Federico Fellini. Shooting began in January 1945. The film was made under very hard conditions. There was almost no film industry in Italy then. The famous Cinecittà Studios were not available. They were damaged by the war. Allied forces used them to house displaced people. Rossellini used mostly non-professional actors. He wanted to show the true poverty of Rome. He relied on improvisation instead of a strict script.

Making the film was a big struggle. A wool merchant named Aldo Venturini helped fund it. Production actually stopped because they ran out of cash. A soldier named Rod E. Geiger helped save the project. He was in the Signal Corps. He gave the filmmakers extra rolls of film. These were pieces that the army thought were unfit to use. The film's look changed because of different film stocks. They used Ferrania C6 for outdoor scenes. They used Agfa films for indoor scenes. These different types caused changes in brightness.

The movie became a huge international success. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. In the United States, it made $3 million. This was a very large amount for an Italian film. It helped people everywhere want to see foreign movies. The film is so special that Italy has a list of films to save. In 2008, it was on a list of 100 films to protect. These films changed the memory of the country.
