He is best known for leading a movement called Neorealism. This style of filmmaking focused on showing real life. Rossellini wanted his movies to feel very true to the world. He often used regular people instead of professional actors. He let them use their own real accents and clothes. This helped his films capture the feelings of real history. His famous Neorealist Trilogy included Rome, Open City, Paisan, and Germany, Year Zero.

Rossellini learned about movies from a very young age. His father built the first cinema in Rome, called the Barberini. This gave young Roberto unlimited free passes to watch films. As he grew up, he worked many different jobs in film. He worked in film sound-making and helped with other small tasks. These jobs helped him learn every part of making a movie. He even had a brother named Renzo who wrote music for his films. Rossellini also had a deep interest in Christian values and ethics.

His career changed a lot during the years of World War II. Early in his career, he made a group of films called the Fascist Trilogy. These included The White Ship, A Pilot Returns, and The Man with a Cross. After the war, he began making his famous Neorealist films. He made Rome, Open City in 1945 with help from Federico Fellini. Because money was hard to find, he had to use loans. He even had to find film on the black market. His movies became an immediate success with audiences everywhere.
