His father built a cinema in Rome. This gave Roberto many free movie passes. He spent much of his youth watching films. Later, he worked many small jobs in film. He learned how to make sounds for movies. He also learned how to help direct them.

Roberto led a style called Neorealism. This style focused on real life. He often used non-actors for his films. These were regular people, not movie stars. He used their real accents and clothes. This made his movies feel very true. His famous Neorealist Trilogy included the film Rome, Open City.

He also worked with a star named Ingrid Bergman. They made many films together. These included films like Stromboli and Journey to Italy. Their work together was very famous. It also caused many big scandals in the news.

Many directors learned from Roberto. He was like a father to the French New Wave. This was a new way of making movies in France. He loved to try new and strange ways to film. He never stopped testing new ideas.
