The Cardinalidae family is a group of beautiful songbirds found in the Americas.

This family includes cardinals, grosbeaks, buntings, and tanagers. They live in many different places, from Canada down to Argentina. Some birds like the western tanager live in the far north.

Most of these birds live in trees, but the dickcissel lives on the ground in prairies.

People love these birds because their feathers are so bright. They often show off brilliant red, yellow, or blue colors.

Cardinals and grosbeaks have large, heavy bills for crushing seeds. This helps them eat fruit and seeds during the winter. Other birds, like the buntings, have much smaller bills.

These smaller bills are good for eating insects. During the breeding season, many birds eat more insects to help raise their young. This provides the energy they need for daily activities. Some birds, like the Piranga genus, even have serrations on their bills.

Scientists used to think these birds were part of the finch family. They grouped them together because they all had heavy, seed-crushing bills.

However, modern science uses DNA to find true family relationships. In 2007, a study by Klicka, Burns, and Spellman changed what we knew. They looked at the genetic code of many different species. This work showed that some birds were actually closer to tanagers. Now, we know the family is divided into six distinct subgroups.

Many birds in this family change their colors through a process called molting.

This is a way they replace old feathers with new ones. In many species, males have bright colors while females are more drab. In temperate areas, males often change their look between seasons. An indigo bunting can go through four different plumage stages in one year. They start with juvenile feathers and move through several stages. Eventually, they reach their bright breeding plumage in the spring.

Most cardinalid birds are monogamous, meaning they have one partner for breeding.

They build nests that look like open cups to hold their eggs. Parents take turns sitting on the eggs to keep them warm. They also work together to care for the babies. Some birds, like the dickcissel, are different and have more than one partner. Most of these birds are doing well in the wild. However, a few species like the Carrizal seedeater are endangered.

We can learn a lot by watching how they live in their habitats.
