In contrast, genera like Granatellus and certain buntings have much smaller bills. The cardinalid tanagers, such as those in the Piranga genus, have stout, nearly pointed bills. Some Piranga species even feature serrations along the edges of their upper bills. During the breeding season, most species supplement their diet with invertebrate prey. This provides the necessary energy for reproduction and daily survival.

Plumage in this family is often sexually dichromatic. This means males and females look different.

In many species, males are bright while females are drabber and lighter in color. Many temperate species undergo a complex molt cycle to change their appearance between seasons. For example, the indigo bunting goes through four distinct plumage stages in its first year. These stages include juvenile, supplemental, first basic (non-breeding), and first alternate (breeding) plumage. Tropical species are different because they often retain their bright coloration year-round. Many species also show delayed plumage maturation, where first-year males remain in non-breeding plumage.

Scientists categorize molting into different types. One type is the preformative molt, which is a partial molt. In this process, only the body feathers are replaced, while wing and tail feathers remain. Another type is the eccentric preformative molt. This specific pattern is seen in some species of Cyanoloxia and Passerina. During an eccentric molt, only the outer primary and inner secondary feathers are replaced. These biological processes allow birds to adapt their physical appearance to different environmental needs and seasons.

Historically, taxonomists classified these birds as a tribe within the finch family, Fringillidae. They were grouped together because of their heavy, conical, seed-crushing bills.

However, there were no unifying physical traits that all members shared. In 2007, a mitochondrial DNA study by Klicka, Burns, and Spellman changed this understanding. By sampling the DNA of many genera, researchers discovered that some birds were not cardinalids at all. For instance, the genera Parkerthraustes, Saltator, and Porphyrospiza actually belong to the tanager lineage, Thraupidae. Conversely, several birds previously thought to be tanagers were actually part of the cardinalid radiation.

Modern systematics now divides Cardinalidae into six distinct subclades. These include the Pheucticus lineage and the Granatellus lineage. There is also the "blue" lineage, which contains Spiza, Cyanoloxia, Amaurospiza, Cyanocompsa, and Passerina.

Other groups are the Habia lineage, the "masked" lineage, and the Piranga lineage. These groupings have been supported by subsequent scientific studies. A 2021 paper by Guallar et al. even suggested their ancestors were forest-dwelling birds that occasionally moved into open habitats.

Reproduction in the family is mostly characterized by monogamous breeding.

Most species form pairs and build open-cup nests. Parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the young. While most are monogamous, some exceptions exist. The dickcissel is a polygynous species, meaning it can have multiple partners. Other birds, like the lazuli and painted buntings, also exhibit different mating patterns. In terms of conservation, most cardinalids are listed as "least concern" by the IUCN Red List. However, specific species like the Carrizal seedeater are considered endangered.

Cardinalids are part of the larger Emberizoidea grouping of American endemic songbirds.

This larger system includes thraupids, parulids, icterids, and passerellids. Scientists continue to study the exact relationship between cardinalids and other families. Some studies suggest they are a sister group to Thraupidae. Other research suggests they are related to the Mitrospingidae family.
