Their name means "buffalo." In Thailand, the buffalo is a symbol of hard work, patience, and fighting. The band plays a style called phleng phuea chiwit, which means "songs for life." These songs often talk about social justice and the lives of ordinary people. They also write love songs and songs about big ideas. Because they mix so many sounds, people call them "ethnic rockers" or the "Rolling Stones of Asia."

The band creates music by mixing many different styles together. They take the acoustic folk sound of phleng phuea chiwit and add Western rock and country music. They even use rhythms from Latin music and reggae. One special rhythm they use is called Samcha. This is a mix of Northeastern Thai folk rhythms, like Mo Lam and Luk Thung, with Latin beats. This catchy sound helped their music reach people in places like discos. They use guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and woodwind instruments to make their songs.

The band began in 1980. Three university students named Aed, Keo, and Khai met while studying in the Philippines. They originally played together there, but the group changed when Aed moved back to Thailand. Aed eventually decided to revive the Carabao name with his own band. They released their first album, Lung Khii Maw, in 1981. At that time, the band was still very small. They did not even have a drummer or a lead guitarist yet.

Carabao has had many famous members and big hits over the years. Their third album, Waniphok, became a major hit with its story about a blind musician. Their most famous album is Made In Thailand, which came out in 1984. That album sold more than four million copies! The "classic lineup" included Aed, Keo, Lek, Ot, Pao, Ajaan, and Thierry. This group recorded many hits in the 1980s. Some of their famous songs include "Welcome to Thailand" and "Mae Sai."

Even when members left to start solo careers, the band kept going. They have released 28 official studio albums and over 60 total albums. Fans show their love through big celebrations. In 2011, they held the Carabao New Year Expo. This event lasted seven days and had many themes. People went to music workshops and saw concerts every night. They also looked at Carabao items and sang karaoke. The band and their fans give each other "strength of spirit" through music.
