The band's name means "buffalo" in English. This animal serves as a powerful symbol of fighting, hard work, and patience. Carabao is famous for performing a musical style known as phleng phuea chiwit. This term translates to "songs for life." This genre grew out of the protest songs used during the political upheaval in Thailand during the 1970s. While many artists play this style, Carabao is uniquely known for blending it with many other sounds. This variety has earned them nicknames like "ethnic rockers" or the "Rolling Stones of Asia."

To create their unique sound, the band uses a complex mix of musical influences. They take the acoustic folk foundations of phleng phuea chiwit and combine them with Western rock and country music. They also incorporate world music elements, such as reggae and Latin beats. One of their most important rhythmic innovations is the Samcha rhythm. This is a specific blend of Northeastern Thai folk rhythms, including Mo Lam and Luk Thung, with Latin beats. This catchy, indigenous rhythm helped their music break into Thai discos, which previously only played Western songs. Their instrumentation includes guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and various woodwind instruments.

The band's history began in 1980 in the Philippines. Three university students named Yuenyong Opakul (Aed), Kirati Promsaka Na Sakon Nakhon (Keo), and Sanit Limsila (Khai) met while studying at the Mapúa Institute of Technology. They originally played together as a trio of singers and guitarists. However, the group changed when Aed returned to Thailand. After playing with other groups like "Hammer" and "Hope," Aed decided to revive the Carabao name as his own band. They released their first album, Lung Khii Maw, in 1981. At that time, the group was still small and lacked a drummer, lead guitarist, or keyboardist.

Carabao reached national stardom through several key musical milestones. Their third album, Waniphok, became a major hit with a title song about a blind street musician. This was followed by their most successful album, Made In Thailand, released in 1984. This massive success saw the album sell over four million copies. The album was incredibly diverse, mixing rock and folk with reggae and even classical Thai music. During this era, the band established what many fans call the "classic lineup." This seven-member group included Aed, Keo, Lek, Ot, Pao, Ajaan, and Thierry.

Throughout the 1980s, the band's work became increasingly political and powerful. Their songs often addressed social justice and supported the causes of ordinary Thai people. Lead singer Aed became famous for his sharp tongue and his open criticism of big business, environmental destruction, and corrupt politicians. This outspoken nature sometimes led to trouble with the government. At least one or two songs from most of their albums up to the mid-1990s were actually banned. Because of this, government-run TV and radio stations rarely provided coverage of the band. Despite these restrictions, they remained the most dominant musical group in the country.

Even as the classic lineup began to fragment in 1988, the band continued to evolve. Several members left to pursue solo careers, which led to periods of reorganization. At one point, the group even performed under the names of the remaining members, Aed, Lek, and Ot. Eventually, they decided to officially revive the Carabao name with new members. They have since released 28 official studio albums between 1981 and 2013. When including live albums and compilations, their total discography exceeds 60 releases. This long career shows their ability to adapt to different eras of Thai music.

The band's connection to their fans is celebrated through massive events. In 2011, they celebrated their 30th anniversary with a series of large concerts across Thailand. The biggest event was "Velodrome Returns," where the band played nearly 50 songs. They also held the Carabao New Year Expo, a seven-day convention. This event included music workshops, karaoke, and displays of band memorabilia.

The theme of their 30th-anniversary album, Gamlang Jai, means "Strength of Spirit." This title reflects the deep bond between the band and their listeners, who provide each other with moral support.
