It lives in the moist coastal mountains of the Pacific Northwest. You can find these trees from Alaska down to California. They grow in many places, including the Cascades and the Klamath Mountains. This tree is very tall and can grow quite wide. Its branches hang down in flat sprays, which gives it a graceful look. This style is often called a weeping appearance.

This tree has a very interesting way it works to stay healthy. It grows very slowly, which makes its wood very hard. The tree also has special chemicals inside it. These chemicals act as anti-fungal agents to help it live a long time. The tree is also rarely bothered by insects. However, it can sometimes suffer from heart rot. To grow well, it needs a lot of rain. It also likes deep snow to help it stay safe.

Scientists have spent a long time studying this tree. It was first described in 1824 as Cupressus nootkatensis. Later, in 1841, it was moved to a group called Chamaecyparis. This happened because its leaves grow in flat sprays. However, the way its cones grow did not fit that group. Scientists used genetic evidence in the year 2000 to change its name again. In 2021, a study helped confirm its place in the genus Callitropsis.

There are many important facts about the Nootka cypress. In the Caren Range of British Columbia, some trees are very old. One tree is 1,834 years old, and some may be over 3,000 years old! The name nootkatensis comes from Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island. This area was named after the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation. The tree's cones take two years to mature. These cones usually have four or six scales. The seeds are small and have wings to help them move.

People have used this tree for many different things. Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest used the strong bark for baskets. They also used the wood to make paddles, masks, and bows. The wood is very durable and resists weather well. It is even used for building boats and making fine furniture. Some people use it for saunas because it handles moisture well. It is also a great firewood that burns very hot. Even after a tree dies, the wood can be used for 100 years.
