The Nootka cypress is a very tall tree.

It lives in the mountains near the sea. You can find it from Alaska down to California. This tree stays green all year long. Its branches hang down in flat sprays. This gives the tree a graceful, weeping look.

Some of these trees live for a long time. One tree in British Columbia is 1,834 years old. Some may even be over 3,000 years old! This is because the tree has special chemicals. These chemicals help it fight off fungus. The tree also grows very slowly.

Snow is very important for this tree. Deep snow acts like a warm blanket. It keeps the shallow roots safe from the cold Arctic winter. If the snow melts too soon, the roots can freeze. This is a problem caused by warming weather.

People have used this tree for a long time. Indigenous peoples used the strong bark for baskets and thread. They also used the wood for paddles and masks. The wood is very hard and lasts a long time. It is even used to build boats and houses.
