Some busy locations even have electronic screens that show bus times.

There are different ways a bus might use a stop. Some are scheduled stops where the bus stops every time. Other stops are called request stops. At these, the bus only stops if a person asks it to.

There are also hail and ride stops. At these, a bus can stop anywhere along a specific part of the road if requested. Some stops are only for picking people up. Others are only for letting people off the bus. In crowded cities, some buses use skip-stops to move faster. This helps them avoid delays and makes the trip more efficient.

Bus stops have a very long history. Long ago, horse-drawn stage coaches ran between European towns. They stopped at coaching inns so people could board.

One famous stop was the Angel Inn in Islington. In 1824, John Greenwood started the first bus line in Manchester, Britain. He ran a fixed route without needing reservations. In 1829, George Shillibeer started a horse omnibus service in London. He ran between Paddington and the Bank of England. By the middle of the 1800s, people even used maps to find London bus stops.

Modern bus stops can look many different ways. Many use steel and glass to make a shelter.
