His real name is Winston Rodney. He was born in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica, around 1945. As a young man, he listened to American radio stations. He heard soul, jazz, and R&B music on these broadcasts. These sounds helped shape his musical style. He was also inspired by the ideas of Marcus Garvey. Garvey was a political activist who spoke about Pan-Africanism. This means the connection between people of African descent. Rodney used these deep themes in his own songs.

His musical journey began with a group called Burning Spear. The name came from a military award. It was given by Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya. In 1969, Bob Marley gave Rodney some helpful advice. Marley told him to visit a famous studio called Studio One. Rodney auditioned there with his group. They recorded their first single, "Door Peep," with a saxophonist named Cedric Brooks. Later, the group worked with a producer named Jack Ruby. They recorded the hit song "Marcus Garvey" in 1975. This song was a big success for them.

Rodney wanted to have full control over his art.

Some record companies changed his music without asking. They even altered the speed of his tracks. This made his fans and the group unhappy. To fix this, he started his own label called Burning Music. His wife, Sonia Rodney, helped him run it. Together, they have released nearly 40 different items. These include singles, CDs, DVDs, and vinyl albums. Using his own label allowed him to keep his music exactly how he wanted it.

Burning Spear has had a very long and busy career. He has signed with many different music companies. These include Island Records, EMI, Heartbeat Records, and his own Burning Music. He has won two Grammy Awards for his work. The first was in 2000 for the album "Calling Rastafari." He won his second Grammy in 2009 for "Jah Is Real." He has actually been nominated for a total of 12 Grammy Awards. This shows how much people respect his talent and skill.

He has traveled all over the world to play music.
