This means most owners are not the main company itself. Instead, nearly 99.7% of the stores are privately owned and run by others. These owners pay for a license to use the Burger King name. Some large owners are called master franchises. They can sell smaller licenses to other people in their region. This way helps the company grow to many different places quickly.

The history of the chain began in Jacksonville, Florida. It was first called Insta-Burger King on July 23, 1953. The founders used special tools called Insta-machines to make food. One tool was an oven called the Insta-Broiler. Later, two men named David Edgerton and James McLamore bought it in 1959. They changed the name to Burger King. In 1957, they added the Whopper to the menu. This became their most famous signature product.

The company has changed owners four different times over many years. In 2002, a group of firms led by TPG Capital bought it. They took the company public, which means people could buy its stock. Later, 3G Capital from Brazil bought a majority stake in 2010. This deal was valued at US$3.26 billion. In 2014, Burger King merged with Tim Hortons. They formed a new parent company called Restaurant Brands International.

You can find Burger King in many different parts of the world. As of late 2018, there were 17,796 outlets in 100 countries. Nearly half of all these stores are in the United States. Some places even have different names for the same food. For example, the Australian franchise is called Hungry Jack's. This happened because of a legal dispute over the name. Today, the company is even testing new store designs called "The Sizzle."
