The company operates primarily through a system called franchising.

In this model, most stores are not owned by the main corporation. As of December 31, 2018, 99.7% of Burger King outlets were privately owned and operated. The company uses various versions of franchising to expand its reach. Some large regional owners are called master franchises. These master franchises are responsible for selling sub-licenses to other operators in their specific regions. This allows the brand to grow rapidly in many different countries.

Burger King's origins date back to July 23, 1953.

It was originally founded in Jacksonville, Florida, under the name Insta-Burger King. The founders, Keith G. Cramer and Matthew Burns, used specialized equipment. They utilized "Insta-machines" to assist in food production. One specific tool was an oven called the Insta-Broiler. This technology was so central to their success that all future franchises were required to use it. In 1957, the company introduced the Whopper. This sandwich eventually became the signature product for the entire brand.

The company's ownership has changed hands four times over many decades.

In 1959, David Edgerton and James McLamore purchased the company. They renamed it Burger King and grew it to over 250 U.S. locations. Later, the Pillsbury Company owned the chain and hired executives to lead "Operation Phoenix." This plan updated franchise agreements and standardized restaurant designs. However, leadership changes and declining sales led to periods of instability. Eventually, the company was sold to Grand Metropolitan, and later to the holding company Diageo.

In 2002, a group of investment firms led by TPG Capital purchased the company for $1.5 billion.

This group took the company public in 2006 through an initial public offering. This meant the company's stock could be traded on public markets. In 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in a deal valued at $3.26 billion. This acquisition led to the company being removed from the New York Stock Exchange. This move allowed the owners to restructure the business without focusing on immediate shareholder demands.

Burger King has a massive global footprint.

By the end of 2018, the company reported 17,796 outlets in 100 countries. Nearly half of these locations are situated within the United States. In 2014, Burger King merged with the Canadian coffeehouse chain Tim Hortons.

This merger happened under a new parent company called Restaurant Brands International. This combined entity became the third-largest international fast food chain in the world. This merger also involved a controversial practice known as tax inversion.

The company constantly evolves its menu and store designs. Between 2002 and 2010, the company targeted males aged 18 to 34. They offered larger products that often contained high amounts of unhealthy fats and trans-fats. This strategy eventually hurt the company's financial standing. Since 2011, 3G Capital has worked to reformulate products and change packaging. In 2023, the company announced "The Sizzle" design concept.
