It is often made using colorful silk threads. Some weavers even add shiny gold or silver threads to the cloth. This creates a very rich and fancy look. The name comes from an Italian word meaning "embossed cloth." This word originally meant to set something with small nails. Today, people value brocade for its elegance and its special texture.

Weavers create these patterns using a special way of working on a loom. They use a method called supplementary weft. This means they add extra threads that are not needed for the main structure. These extra threads create the pretty designs on the surface. This technique makes the fabric look like it was embroidered by hand. Sometimes the extra threads make the cloth feel a bit stiff. In some styles, the extra threads hang loose on the back of the fabric. In others, the yarns are cut away to make the pattern.

The history of brocade goes back a very long time. In China, making brocade began during the Warring States period. Many pieces of this fabric have been found in old tombs. China has many famous styles of this cloth. These include Yunjin, which means Cloud brocade, from Nanjing. There is also Song brocade from Suzhou and Shu brocade from Chengdu. In the Malay world, a type of brocade is called Songket.

In the past, brocade was a luxury for the very wealthy. During the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Empire was a major maker of silk. For a long time, the secret of making silk was kept by the Chinese. In the 6th century, two monks brought the secret of raising silkworms to the Byzantine emperor. This allowed Western cultures to learn how to make silk too. By the 9th century, Byzantium was a central producer of many silk types. The Byzantine emperor charged very high prices for this fabric.

Brocade has stayed important through many different eras. During the Renaissance, Italy became the best place to make fine silk fabrics. These beautiful textiles matched the elegant fashions of that time.

Today, many brocade fabrics are made on a Jacquard loom. This machine can create many complex and tapestry-like designs. We use brocade for many things today. It is used for curtains, formal clothing, and stage costumes. In India, Banarasi brocade is used to decorate beautiful saris and dresses.
