They are very handy for many different jobs.

There are several ways these bags work today. A portfolio is one kind used for loose papers. A padfolio is different because it has a writing pad inside. You might also see an attaché case. This type has a very strong, box-like structure. Some people use a travel briefcase for trips. These have extra compartments to hold more things.

These bags have a very long history. Ancient Roman soldiers used a bag called a loculus. This was a rectangular satchel for personal things. Soldiers used it to carry their rations and belongings. By the fifteenth century, people used similar satchels. They used them to carry documents and personal items. Later, soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars used bags that looked like modern ones.

Some briefcases have special roles in history. In 1860, a famous place used a red briefcase. This was at 10 Downing Street in Britain. The red bag held papers about the economy. This helped link briefcases to business and money. In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, they became status symbols. People in law and business used them to show their roles.
