In North America, many people call these bags purses. A purse was once a tiny bag just for holding coins. Today, a handbag is much larger and holds many things. It might hold keys, money, or beauty items. Some people also call them pocketbooks in the United States. These bags help people stay organized while they are out.

Bags have been used for thousands of years.

Ancient people used them to carry tools, weapons, and food. In Egypt, early bags were made of leather with two handles. The ancient Greeks used leather or linen bags called byrsa to hold coins. One very old bag was found with Ötzi the Iceman. He lived between 3350 and 3105 BC. Another famous find was at Sutton Hoo in England. This leather purse from 625 CE had forty gold coins inside.

In the past, both men and women carried small purses.

For a long time, these were used only for money. In the 1700s, women used small bags called reticules. These were made of fine silk or velvet. Men did not use these small bags. Instead, men began putting pockets inside their trousers. This allowed them to carry coins and paper money easily. The way people carry things changed as clothes changed.

The modern handbag began during the Industrial Revolution in England.

In 1841, a man named Samuel Parkinson needed better bags. He was a businessman who sold butterscotch. He noticed his wife's purse was too small for travel. He asked H. J. Cave to make special leather bags. These bags were made to match his heavy traveling trunks. Cave made different types like the clutch and the tote. These were the first luxury handbags we recognize today.

Today, there are many different styles of bags to choose from.

A clutch is a small bag without handles. A bucket bag is shaped like a bucket and uses a drawstring. Some bags are even shaped like a loaf of bread. These are called baguette bags. Men also use bags, such as messenger bags or backpacks. The trade for men's bags is a huge $4-billion-a-year industry. Whether for fashion or for work, bags help us carry our world.
