A wallet is a flat case or pouch used to hold small items. Most people use them to carry paper money and cards. You might keep debit cards, credit cards, or identification in one. They can also hold photos, transit passes, or business cards.

Many wallets are made of leather or fabric. They are usually small enough to fit in a pocket. Some people even use them as fashion accessories to show their style.

There are many ways a wallet can work. A bi-fold wallet folds in half just once. A tri-fold wallet has two folds to keep things organized.

Some wallets use a zipper or a snap to stay closed. Others might have a money clip or a small coin purse. You can even find a long wallet that attaches to your clothes with a chain. There are even special wallets worn on the wrist or even a shoe!

Wallets have a very long history. In ancient Greece, a pouch called a kibisis was used by the god Hermes.

Scholars say these old pouches were like survival packs for food. In the 1600s, wallets changed when paper money was introduced. Before that, people used simple leather pouches to hold coins. An English merchant named John Frampton once carried a leather pouch called a "bowgett." He used it for cash and his daily necessities.

Different places use wallets in unique ways. In 19th century America, people often wore wallets on their belts.

In Spain, a small leather wallet might hold tools to make sparks. In the 1950s, the first credit cards changed how wallets were made. This led to the modern style with many slots for cards. Today, we even have digital wallets on computers. These help people keep track of electronic money safely.

Wallets connect to many parts of our lives. Some people use a travel wallet to keep passports and tickets together. Others use a tactical wallet that holds tools like a small saw or knife.
