Most wallets are small enough to fit in a pocket. They are often made of leather or fabric.

In the past, people used different kinds of pouches. In ancient Greece, a pouch might hold food for survival. Later, people used leather pouches to hold coins. When paper money became common in the 1600s, wallets changed too.

In the 1800s, some Americans wore their wallets on a belt. In Spain, people used small leather wallets to hold tools for making sparks.

Today, there are many ways to carry things. A bi-fold wallet folds in half once. A tri-fold wallet has two folds.
