It is shaped like a box. Most briefcases have a handle. People use them to carry papers.

These bags have a long history. Long ago, Roman soldiers used a bag called a loculus. This was a rectangular satchel. They used it for food and personal things. In the 1400s, people used similar satchels for documents. Soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars used bags like modern ones.

In 1860, a special red bag was used in Britain. It held papers about the economy. This linked briefcases to business and money. By the 1950s, these bags showed status. People in law and business liked them.

Today, there are many kinds of these bags. A portfolio holds loose papers. A padfolio has a pad for writing. An attaché case has a box-like shape.
