His work in science follows a very specific path. He studies particle physics, which looks at the tiny bits of matter. He did research using a machine called the HERA particle accelerator. This machine is located at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. He also worked on the ATLAS experiment. This experiment uses the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland. He uses these tools to learn how the world works.

Cox did not always focus only on science. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he was a keyboard player. He played for a rock band called Dare. This band released two albums, Out of the Silence and Blood from Stone. Later, he played for the pop group D:Ream. He even performed at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2024. Music has always been a big part of his life.

His journey toward science began when he was young. He was born in 1968 at the Royal Oldham Hospital. When he was twelve, he read a book called Cosmos by Carl Sagan. This book inspired him to become a physicist. He attended the Hulme Grammar School in Oldham. He later earned a degree from the University of Manchester in 1991. He finished his PhD in 1998.

Today, his work connects science to the things we see every day. He hosts shows like The Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC Radio 4. He has also made series like Wonders of the Solar System. These shows help us see the beauty of space.
