He served as the High King from 1002 to 1014. At that time, Ireland was not one single country. Instead, it had over 150 different kings. Each king ruled over a smaller area or domain. Brian changed this by becoming a very strong ruler. He ended the long rule of the Uí Néill family. He is also known for stopping Viking invasions. Many people see him as a leader who brought people together.

Brian's life began in a place called Kincora.

He was one of twelve brothers. His father was Cennétig mac Lorcáin, a king in Munster. When Brian was only ten years old, his father died. This happened during a battle with the Vikings of Limerick. A Viking raid also hurt Brian's family very badly. He saw smoke and heard screams from a nearby fort. This sad event stayed with him for his whole life. It likely made him want to build strong naval forces.

Brian worked his way up to power step by step. First, he helped his older brother, Mathgamain. They fought together to win control of Munster.

After Mathgamain died in 976, Brian became the king of Munster. He was a very skilled commander of armies. He fought many battles to make his rule certain. He defeated rivals like Máel Muad at the Battle of Belach Lechta. This victory helped the Dál gCais family take the throne. Soon, he was recognized as the High King of all Ireland.

There are many interesting facts about his time as king.

In 1002, the king Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill accepted Brian as High King. The Annals of Ulster gave Brian a very grand title. They called him the High King of the Gaels and the Norse. They even called him an "Augustus" of north-western Europe. This was a special honor that no other Irish king received. His name is even found in old stories like Njal's Saga. These stories show that people from many lands knew him.

Brian's story ended with a very famous event. In 1014, a large battle took place at Clontarf.
