Gaelic Ireland was a special way of life and a social order. It existed on the island of Ireland for a very long time. This culture lasted from the prehistoric era until the 17th century.

It was not one single kingdom under one ruler. Instead, it was a patchwork of different territories. Many different kings and chiefs ruled these smaller lands.

Some people even recognized a High King of Ireland. This person was a very powerful ruler over the others.

Society worked through a system of family groups called a fine. These groups were made of people related through male ancestors.

Within these groups, people held different ranks or classes. Some people were kings, poets, or doctors. Others were freemen who owned cattle or land. At the bottom were unfree people, such as serfs or slaves.

You could sometimes move between these ranks by gaining skill or wealth. For example, a person could become a briugu by being very hospitable. This meant they kept their home open to all guests.

Leadership followed a unique rule called tanistry. When a king was in power, his family elected a deputy. This deputy was called a tanist.

The tanist was chosen because they were the most fitting relative. When the king died, the tanist automatically became the new leader. This helped ensure the land always had a leader ready. This system was used by many different groups in Ireland. Even some Norman lords later began to use tanistry too.

Religion and stories changed as time went on. Originally, the people were pagan and believed in many gods.

Irish monks began to write down old myths and laws. These monks made monasteries into great centers of learning. They even helped spread Christianity to other parts of Europe.

New arrivals eventually changed the landscape of Ireland. Vikings began raiding and building towns along the coasts in the 9th century.

Later, the Anglo-Normans arrived in the 1170s. They took control of large parts of the country. The English King began to claim power over the land. By 1542, the Lordship of Ireland became the Kingdom of Ireland.
