Ogham is a very old way of writing.

People used this alphabet to write the early Irish language. It was used for special stone carvings from the 4th to the 6th centuries AD. Later, it was used for a style called scholastic ogham. This version lasted from the 6th to the 9th centuries.

Many of these carvings show the names of people. Some might even mark who owned a piece of land. This script helps us understand how people lived long ago.

Writing in Ogham looks very different from our letters. The alphabet is made of groups of strokes. There are four groups with five letters in each. This makes twenty original letters. There are also five extra letters called forfeda.

Many people call it the "Celtic tree alphabet." This is because the names of the letters come from trees and plants. For example, one letter is named after the birch tree. You can see these marks carved into tall stone pillars.

Scholars have many ideas about how Ogham began. Some think it was a secret code. They believe Irish scholars made it to hide messages from Roman leaders. Others think early Christian groups in Ireland invented it. These groups might have wanted a unique way to write Irish sounds.

Some even think the letters started as a way of counting marks. One idea is that the letters came from a system using the numbers five and twenty. There is also a theory about finger signals used by druids long ago.

We can find many real examples of Ogham today. There are about 400 surviving stone carvings in Ireland and western Britain.

Most of these are in the Irish province of Munster. In fact, the counties of Cork and Kerry have 60% of all Irish Ogham stones. The largest group outside of Ireland is in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Some stones are even bilingual. This means they have both Ogham and Latin writing on them.

Ogham is also part of many old stories.

Irish folklore says a king named Fenius Farsa invented it. He supposedly created it after the Tower of Babel fell. Another legend says a man named Ogma created the script. He was very good at speech and poetry. He made the system so only learned people could use it. These stories show how much people valued this special way of writing.
