Runes are special sets of letters used by Germanic peoples.

People used these characters to represent specific sounds. They also used them to represent big ideas or concepts. This is called using ideographic runes.

Most runes have very straight and angular shapes. This design was very helpful for the people using them. It made it easier to carve messages into hard stone or wood. If the lines were too curvy, the wood might split apart.

Today, scholars who study these ancient writings are called runologists.

There are several different ways these alphabets worked.

One famous group is called the Elder Futhark. This group was used from about AD 150 to AD 800. Another group is the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, used from AD 400 to AD 1100.

There is also the Younger Futhark, used between AD 800 and AD 1100. This alphabet had different styles like long-branch and short-branch runes. Some people even used special versions called staveless runes. These different styles helped people write in different parts of Europe.

Finding out where runes first came from is a big mystery.

Some experts think they came from the Phoenician alphabet. Others believe they might have started from the Latin alphabet. Some scholars look at older scripts like the Rhaetic or Etruscan alphabets.

We do not know the exact way the script was passed down. Some think it moved through West Germanic groups. Others suggest it spread through East Germanic expansion. Even though we have many theories, the true origin remains unclear.

Runes have a very long and interesting history.

The earliest secure inscriptions date back to at least AD 150. One possible very old inscription might even be from AD 50.

A Roman writer named Tacitus wrote about rune-like marks around AD 98. He described people using marks on wood strips for divination. This was a way to seek guidance from the gods. As people became Christian, they started using the Latin alphabet instead. This change happened around AD 700 in central Europe.

Even after they were replaced, runes stayed important for a while.

In rural Sweden, people used them for decoration in Dalarna. They also used runes on special calendars until the early 20th century.

This shows how much people valued the special power of these marks. They remain a fascinating link to the ancient past.
