These achievements made him one of the most famous cyclists in the world.

Cycling involves many different types of competition. In track cycling, riders race on a velodrome, which is a banked indoor track. Wiggins excelled in the individual pursuit and the team pursuit. In the individual pursuit, a rider races against the clock to set the fastest time. The team pursuit requires riders to work together in a group. He also won world titles in the Madison, a race where two partners switch off. On the road, he specialized in the time trial.

In a time trial, a rider must ride as fast as possible alone against the clock. He also showed great skill in stage races, which are multi-day events.

In 2012, Wiggins achieved a historic series of victories. He became the first British winner of the Tour de France.

That same year, he won the gold medal in the Olympic time trial. He won these two major titles only one week apart. He also won the Paris–Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2012. For his performance, he received the Vélo d'Or, an award for the best rider of the year. These wins cemented his place in cycling history.

Wiggins' journey began in Ghent, Belgium, where he was born in 1980.

His father, Gary Wiggins, was also a professional cyclist. Wiggins moved to London at age two and began track cycling at age 12. He started training at the Herne Hill Velodrome. After a road accident, he used compensation money to buy his first racing bicycle. He joined the Archer Road Club to develop his skills. By age 18, he won his first junior world championship in Cuba.

Throughout his career, Wiggins collected many prestigious honors. He won eight Olympic medals across five different Games.

In 2013, he was awarded a knighthood for his services to cycling. This title officially made him Sir Bradley Wiggins.

During his time with Team Sky, some controversies arose regarding medical practices.

A 2018 report from the British House of Commons discussed the use of triamcinolone. This is a powerful corticosteroid medication. The report stated that Team Sky used the drug under a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). A TUE allows a rider to use a medicine for a medical need. The report concluded the drug was used to improve his power-to-weight ratio for the Tour de France. However, Wiggins did not receive any bans or suspensions during his career.

Wiggins' career connects many different worlds of sport. He moved from the specialized environment of the track to the endurance demands of the road. He also bridged the gap between amateur club racing and professional global competition. He held the record for Great Britain's most decorated Olympian for several years.
