Hoy's journey into cycling began with a very modest start. His first bicycle cost only £5. He was inspired to ride at age six by the BMX bike in the film *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial*. Between the ages of 7 and 14, he raced BMX bikes. He reached high rankings, including fifth in Europe and ninth in the world. He eventually moved toward track cycling after watching Scottish sprinter Eddie Alexander win a bronze medal in 1986.

Track cycling involves several specific disciplines that require different skills. One major event is the Kilo Time Trial, which Hoy won in Athens in 2004. In this event, the rider must complete one kilometer as fast as possible. Another discipline is the Keirin, which is a tactical race. In a Keirin race, six to eight riders follow a small motorbike called a Derny. The Derny gradually increases speed over 5.5 laps. Once the motorbike pulls away with 2.5 laps remaining, the riders sprint for the finish line.

Hoy also excelled in the Team Sprint and the individual Match Sprint. The Team Sprint requires riders to work together to reach high speeds. Hoy often rode alongside teammates like Jason Kenny, Craig MacLean, and Jamie Staff. In the individual Sprint, riders use strategy and power to beat their opponents. In 2007, Hoy won the sprint title at a World Cup event in Manchester. He was the first British man to win that specific title in 52 years.

His Olympic career is marked by several historic milestones. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he won his first medal, a silver in the Team Sprint. In 2004, he set a new sea-level World and Olympic Record in the Kilo with a time of 1:00.711. The 2008 Beijing Olympics were particularly significant for his legacy. He won three gold medals in a single Games: the keirin, the team sprint, and the individual sprint. This made him the first British male athlete to achieve three golds in one Olympics since 1908.

His athletic career also faced physical challenges and injuries. In 2009, he suffered a serious degloving injury, which is a type of skin injury. This forced him to miss several months of racing and a World Championship event. Despite these setbacks, he continued to win major titles, including his tenth world title in 2010.
