It is a small part of the country, making up only 1% of the total land. Even though it is small, it is home to about 2.37% of the country's people. The main city of the district is also called Brčko. This area is a self-governing unit that works like a local government. It is also known as a condominium. This means it is shared by the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska.

The way this district works is quite unique. It was made to help different groups of people live together in one place. Before it was formed, the land was split between two different sides. About 48% of the old Brčko area was in the Republika Srpska. The other 52% was in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. To fix this, a special process called arbitration was used. This helped decide how the land would be managed. After the rules were set, the district began to run its own local affairs.

The history of Brčko District began with the Dayton Peace Accords. These were agreements made to bring peace to the region. However, the status of Brčko was not finished at that time. An international leader called the High Representative helped manage the process. The first International Supervisor arrived in April 1997. Later, in March 1999, the arbitration was finally finished. This created the district we see today. Since 2006, a different official has taken over the supervisor role.

There are many interesting facts about the people and laws here. In 2013, the total population was 83,516 people. Many different ethnic groups live in the district together. Bosniaks made up about 42.36% of the people in 2013. Serbs made up about 34.58%, and Croats made up about 20.66%. The district has its own Assembly with 31 seats. In 2006, a ruling by Susan Johnson changed the laws. This ruling removed the old entity laws and the entity border line. Now, the laws of the district are the most important ones.

Brčko District is a place where many different paths meet. In the 1990s, a place called the Arizona Market became very successful. It sat where important north-south and east-west roads crossed. Today, the district remains a center for many different programs. It is a place where people from different backgrounds live and work. Many famous people have connections to this area. These include the rapper Edo Maajka and the singer Lepa Brena. The district continues to be a key part of the country's story.
