The Book of Judith is a significant ancient text found in several versions of the Bible.

It is included in the Old Testament for Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Church of the East traditions. However, it is excluded from the Hebrew canon. Many Protestant groups also place it in a section called the apocrypha. This means it is viewed differently by various religious groups. Some see it as sacred scripture, while others see it as a tool for moral instruction.

The narrative follows a daring Jewish widow named Judith. Her name means "praised" or "Jewess."

The story takes place while the Assyrian general Holofernes is besieging the town of Bethulia. Judith becomes upset with her people for lacking faith in God. She decides to take action to save them from destruction. She travels to the enemy camp accompanied by her loyal maid.

Using her beauty and charm, she gains Holofernes' trust. She promises him information regarding the people of Israel. One night, while the general is in a drunken stupor, she decapitates him. She returns to her people with his head. This act causes the Assyrians to disperse and saves Jerusalem.

Scholars have debated the original language of the text for a long time. The oldest surviving version is the Septuagint, which is a Greek translation.

However, many researchers believe it was originally written in a Semitic language. They point to many Hebraisms, which are Hebrew linguistic features, in the text. Some experts suggest it was written in Hebrew or Aramaic. The scholar Jerome produced a Latin translation known as the Vulgate. Jerome believed the book was written in "Chaldean" or Aramaic words. He used an Aramaic manuscript that has since been lost. This manuscript was shorter than the Septuagint because Jerome omitted parts he could not understand.

The literary structure of the book is divided into two distinct acts. The first seven chapters describe the military threat led by King Nebuchadnezzar. These chapters focus on the siege of Bethulia. The second half, from chapters 8 to 16, focuses on Judith's heroic actions.

Some scholars identify a chiastic pattern in these acts. A chiastic pattern is a structure where events are repeated in reverse order. This creates a balanced symmetry within the narrative. The first half emphasizes military developments and themes of rest and action. The second half focuses on the character and strength of Judith.

There is significant debate regarding the historical accuracy of the book. Most modern scholars consider the book to be ahistorical. They classify it as a parable or a theological novel. They note several historical anachronisms in the text. An anachronism is something that is placed in the wrong time period. For example, the book mentions kingdoms that did not exist during the described era. The Jewish Encyclopedia suggests the name "Bethulia" might be a changed name. It argues the name was changed to avoid feuds between Jews and Samaritans. The Jewish Encyclopedia identifies Shechem, or modern Nablus, as the real location.

The status of the book has changed throughout history. The Roman Catholic Church traditionally maintained that the events were historical. They assigned the story to the reign of King Manasseh. The Council of Trent dogmatically defined the book as canonical in 1546.

In contrast, Martin Luther viewed the book as an allegory. He placed it in the Apocrypha of the Luther Bible. Anglicanism views it as having intermediate authority. It is considered useful for devotion but not for establishing doctrine. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church also mentions Judith in the book 1 Meqabyan.

The book has also influenced religious customs and art. In some Jewish traditions, a version of the story is read during Hanukkah. This is linked to a midrashic variant of the tale. In this version, Judith feeds the antagonist cheese and wine before her act. This may be why some people eat dairy during Hanukkah.

The dramatic scene has also inspired many famous artists.
