Booby

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A booby is a type of seabird.

These birds belong to the family Sulidae. They are close relatives of the gannet. Boobies are great at hunting fish. They dive from high up into the sea. They chase their prey underwater. To stay safe, they have air sacs under their skin. These sacs act like cushions. They help the bird hit the water safely.

Boobies live in large groups on coasts and islands. These groups are called colonies. They make nests on the ground or in trees. Most boobies lay blue eggs with a chalky shell.

The name booby may come from an old Spanish word. It meant "stupid." This is because the birds are very tame. Long ago, they would land on sailing ships. Sailors could easily catch them to eat. Even famous sailors like William Bligh ate them. This happened when his crew was adrift at sea. There are six species of boobies in the genus Sula. Other birds in the same family are gannets.
